My Journal

Last Saturday a fashion show and silent auction were held at Finnigans Hall to raise money for the Parkville Police Department's Shop With a Cop program. I am anxious to sit down with the chief tomorrow to see if the event was a success and to see how much money they raised. Hopefully I will be able to put some pictures up. I think it's a good thing they are reaching out to the community in that way. I do think police work is really about service and in that way they are providing an important service to community.

Tomorrow I will also begin working on getting information for my narrative. I am meeting the chief at noon and hopefully everything goes well. I'm still a little intimidated by the narrative story but I'm trying to think positively.

Last week I had a little run in with the law. Well not really, but I did get to see how Parkville police officers provide service to the community. I locked my keys in my car on the Park University Campus on Monday morning and I thought I was going to be stuck there. Luckily, I was smart enough to go to the Public Safety office on campus and they called the Parkville Police Department to come help me out.

I waited by my car for an officer to arrive. When the officer pulled up he checked my license plates to make sure it wasn't a stolen car..and you guessed it.. it wasn't.  He went to his car and pulled out a very long pink (I wonder why?)  metal rod and jammed it through the crack of my window. He unlocked it his first try, and it took about five seconds. He's pretty good at unlocking cars because he does it all the time. He said they get called to unlock cars on campus several times a week.  This made me feel like less of an idiot, which is good.

I thanked him for his help and he drove away. My car was unlocked and it was a FREE service.
I am really thankful they provide this for the community. It really helped me out, and I think it's great that they do it for free. If you want to know about other services the Parkville Police Department provides I've provided a link below

I found this article on the NBC Action News website. It was posted on Feb. 17, and it's about the homicide that occurred last July in Parkville Mo. The suspect Justin L. Dougan, plead guilty to second degree-murder and is scheduled to be sentenced May 12. The link is posted below.

I went to the station Tuesday night to report on the events taking place during the City's Board of Aldermen meeting. Two officers were honored for saving a mans life and received awards. Another award was presented to a citizen who was a big contributor to the Shop with a Cop program last year.

It was my second time being at one of those meetings, and I will have to say it was a full house that night. There weren't many empty seats in the place. Channel 9 News showed up as well, which was pretty cool. Although I'm not a professional reporter I was treated with the same amount of respect and was received kindly there.

I had a chance to speak with the victim as well as the two honored officers. I snapped some pictures of the event as well. The victim brought his family with him and you could tell they were very thankful for what the officers had done. Speaking of family, I also got to meet the Chief's wife and she showed me pictures of their two kids and gave me some gum.. haha.  It was a good experience.
